To say I’m getting a little tired of this endless winter would be an understatement. I mean c’mon, I’m not Elsa! The cold does bother me anyway.
Not too long ago I was feeling trapped and antsy inside and knew I needed to do something about it. Because the roads weren’t driveable, I slid into my leopard print rain boots, camera in tow, and took a walk in my backyard.
I wasn’t expecting to get much out of it, no real plan to shoot anything specific. I just knew I needed a break from staring at the tv.
I came back refreshed, rejuvenated, and a bit more appreciative of the season we’re in.
Â
Winter is usually thought of as the “fun for one day” time or the season that ruins plans, causes accidents, and brings down a lot of moods.
And that all can be true, but winter is also beautiful, a great time for rest, and a good exercise of trying to find the beauty in everything.
Convinced to get outside yet?
If my moving dialogue didn’t encourage you, maybe these 5 reasons to get out of the house in the winter will!
1. Vitamin D
Even if the sun is peeking behind heavy clouds and there’s a threat of a new snowfall about to happen, getting some Vitamin D is so good for your health by strengthening your bones and improving your immune system. Not only that, but it’s good for your mood too. I can’t get into all that scientific jazz, but this is why laying on a beach and tanning is so addicting! That sun feels goooood.
2. Exercise
We know that we need to exercise and I can be the first to admit that I’d take the smallest excuse to stay on the couch instead, but it’s worth it to bundle up, if even for a quick walk around the block! Exercise gives you endorphins. Endorphins make you happy. Happy people just don’t shoot their husbands! #namethatmovie
3. Fresh air
One of the reasons we love spring so much is because we can throw open the windows and air out all that winter stank. Well, it doesn’t have to be spring to still get some fresh air. Perhaps it’s not a good idea to open up your window just yet, but it’s a good idea to breathe some new life into those lungs!
4. Clear your head
Stressed? Not sure what to do in a certain situation? Not saying the great outdoors is a miracle worker, but sometimes getting out of the house to clear your head can do wonders.
5. It makes being inside not so bad
When winter first hits we all get so excited to stay snuggled indoors. But that good thing quickly turns into an old thing when it’s the same thing day after day.
Taking a break from the same environment and stepping out for a bit helps being inside not to feel so mundane.
Whether you’re reading this at the first snowfall or just mere weeks away till spring, I challenge you to strap on those boots and head outdoors for a walk. Try to look at things in new ways.
Maybe you’re not into photography, and you don’t have to be, your eyes can be the camera (okay, yeah, cheesy line).
Just by getting outside for a brief time, I think you’ll be surprised at how good you feel. And who knows, maybe you won’t want to come back inside.
“If you choose not to find joy in the snow, you will have less joy in your life, but still have the same amount of snow in your life.”
These are all such great points. I love Winter air – totally makes me want to be productive.
It invigorates you!
Love the photos! I also am in need of a lot of vitamin D!
Let’s all just head to the beach!
I’ve been using some of these stuck in the house days to start spring cleaning. Mostly what I have been doing is decluttering. It feels good to purge. Some of the items will be getting shipped off too!
It really does. I’ve gone through my house twice!
All terrific reasons. I had a roommate in college who had to take vitamin D pills during the winter or be became super mopey.
That’s a good way to get the Vitamin D in!
Ughh so true. My family has experience cabin fever wayyyyy more than I’d like to admit and it’s terrible. Just a breath of fresh air is sometimes all I need!
It sort of just sets the “reset” button!
Wow, your photos are stunning! I can’t imagine dealing with all that snow all the time! It sure does look beautiful, though!
Thank you so much! I will say that I’m anxious for the sun!
I SO relate to this, I’m currently spending the winter in Canada & so far the winter has been absolutley brutal! I am SO ready for some sun!

Oh man, that would be so hard in Canada!
I’m probably biased because I live in Texas and have only seen snow here TWICE, buuuuuut, when I was traveling in Wisconsin I was outside in the snow EVERY day! I looooved it! I’m sure it would be different if I lived there, and hated snow lol. Winter is my fave!
Hahaha well I am glad that you like winter at least! 😉
Beautiful winter pics! Totally agree, going out helps clear the mind and also great to have some fresh air.
It’s funny how things can always seem better after that!
I LOVE that breaking icicle photo!! I’m in Minnesota, and I lived in Alaska for several years…this winter has been worth complaining about. But, actually I’m inspired now…I’m not much of a photographer, but even my little town lot would give me some cool rustic photos over by my old garage. Thanks for giving me a new perspective, I’m off to bundle up the toddler and go treasure hunting. <3
So happy to hear you’re inspired to go off and go treasure hunting. I hope it was rejuvenating for you!
This list is great! This winter has been really hard on me. We have had a lot more snow then usually and its kept me inside. I need to get out more for my mental health. We live on a lake and I love outdoor living, but I do struggle in the winter. Great post! Thanks for sharing!
I struggle too. Hope you enjoy your lake views! I bet it’s amazing in the spring and summer.
